Santa Clara, Santa Clara County
Santa Clara University was founded by Jesuits in 1851, and no college in California has operated longer. Its campus surrounds Mission Santa Clara de Asis, established in 1777 and moved several times before settling on the present site. The mission church, rebuilt after a fire in 1926, serves as the university chapel.
